Katy’s Cantigny Park Senior Session | Chicagoland Senior Photographer
There are some sessions that feel a little more special than others, and Katy’s senior session was definitely one of them. As a Chicagoland senior photographer, I get to meet so many wonderful families and document some of the biggest milestones in their lives, but getting to photograph Katy felt like a particularly sweet full-circle moment.
Fresh out of college, I interned with Katy’s mom. At the time, I never could have imagined that years later I would have my own photography business and eventually get the chance to photograph her daughter’s senior portraits. Once I became a photographer, I always hoped that someday Katy would end up in front of my camera—and I’m so glad that day finally came.
Now, Katy is heading into her final year of high school and will be graduating next spring before heading off to college. What an exciting season to document!
A Cantigny Park Senior Session Filled With Wildflowers
When Katy and I started planning her session, she knew she wanted lots of nature, wildflowers, and beautiful florals. We couldn’t have picked a better location than Cantigny Park.
The gardens and natural scenery gave us so many beautiful backdrops to work with. We spent the evening wandering through the park, finding pockets of flowers and greenery that complemented her vision perfectly.
I love when a senior session feels connected to the person being photographed. Instead of simply choosing a pretty location, we wanted to create portraits that felt like Katy and captured this particular season of her life.
And with three outfit changes, we had plenty of variety!
Each outfit fit her perfectly and gave her gallery a completely different feel. From the more classic portraits to the playful moments surrounded by flowers, every part of the session felt natural and completely her.
Incorporating What She Loves
One of my favorite parts of planning senior portraits is finding little ways to incorporate the things that make each senior unique. For Katy, that meant dance.
She has been dancing her whole life, so there was no question that her pointe shoes needed to make an appearance during her session. 🩰
There is something so incredible about dancers. I will never understand how they are able to move their bodies the way they do! The strength, balance, flexibility, and control that goes into dance is amazing, and I loved being able to capture a little piece of that through her senior portraits.
Her pointe shoes weren’t just a prop—they were a reflection of something that has been such a meaningful part of her life.
Years from now, these photographs won’t just remind Katy of what she looked like during her senior year. They’ll remind her of who she was, what she loved, and what mattered to her during this chapter of her life.
A Full-Circle Moment
There was something pretty special about standing behind my camera and photographing Katy after knowing her mom all those years ago.
When I first met her mom as a fresh college graduate and intern, I never could have pictured where life would eventually take me. Building my photography business has given me the opportunity to photograph so many amazing people, but being invited back into a family I’ve known for years to document such an important milestone is something I don’t take for granted.
It made this session feel like so much more than just senior portraits.
It felt like a little reminder of how quickly time passes and how beautifully life can come full circle.
Celebrating Katy’s Next Chapter
Graduating high school and heading off to college is such a huge milestone. There is excitement, anticipation, and probably a little bit of nervousness mixed in, too.
Katy, I hope your final year of high school is everything you want it to be. I hope you soak up the last little moments, make memories with the people who have been part of this chapter, and get excited for everything waiting for you on the other side of graduation.
And when you head off to college, I hope you carry your confidence, your kindness, and your love of dance with you.
Thank you for trusting me to capture such an important milestone. It truly meant so much to me to have you in front of my camera, especially after hoping for this session for so many years.
Good luck with your last year of high school, Katy! I am wishing you all the best for college and this next chapter of your life. I have a feeling there are some pretty wonderful things ahead for you.
